Can Python Replace Javascript? Where do Python and Javascript stand in comparison to each other? You will get to know answers to each of the questions, in a short while. Do stay tuned and stay alert with me in this adventurous journey, as we embark to replenish our knowledge and quench our thirst. So, let’s start with the topic right away without any further ado!

Can Python replace Javascript?

If you just learned Python and want to use your Python knowledge for everything from machine learning to web development, and are wondering whether or not it can replace JavaScript, you are not alone.

There are many who face the same question. At one time, I did not want to learn JavaScript because I did not want to struggle with learning a new programming language again.

Now, coming back to the topic. Python cannot replace JavaScript on the client side because all modern browsers have a built-in JavaScript engine to run JavaScript code natively on the user’s device, while they do not support Python code. As for the backend, you can choose one of the two languages depending on your needs or personal preference. I guess, you now fully understand why Python cannot replace JavaScript. But, let’s see the use cases of both these programming languages to drive home our point more conclusively.

In front-end development –>

The front-end is the part of a website that users either see or interact with directly when they visit a website. It includes everything, i.e. images, tables, text, buttons, etc. When you visit a website, your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, etc.) makes a request to the server, and the server responds by sending HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files to your device.

The great thing about your browser is that it knows how to render these file types depending on the file type. This is because your browser has a built-in rendering engine to render HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files.

Your browser’s rendering engine must have a JavaScript engine to execute JavaScript code. Fortunately, all modern web browsers are equipped with a JavaScript engine to run JavaScript code natively on the client device. This is not the case with other programming languages such as Python. Because of this, JavaScript can easily interact with HTML via the DOM (Document Object Model).

DOM –>

DOM is basically an interface that treats an HTML document as a tree-like structure where each node is an object that represents a part of a document. This means that all parts of a web page are connected in a tree-like structure so that they can be easily referenced and modified using a scripting language such as JavaScript.

Python does not have an easy way to interact with DOM like JavaScript. It is possible to interact with DOM using Python, but it requires much more effort. You need to use a library like Brython to do this. Brython takes Python code and converts it to appropriate JavaScript code. Now, can it replace JavaScript? No, I do not think so, because ultimately the implementation will still be in JavaScript.

Will Python replace Javascript

In order for Python code to run natively in the browser, developers of all web browsers will need to add a Python interpreter to their browsers. This will lead to increased security and vulnerability risks as security updates and support for different interpreters will need to be provided. In addition, the extra code in the browser puts a strain on the resources of the user’s device. One of the biggest drawbacks of using Python in the browser is the performance penalty in comparison to JavaScript.

JavaScript already has a large ecosystem. Very powerful and robust front-end frameworks like React and Vue.js, which are used to build dynamic interfaces or UI components and single-page applications, are written in JavaScript.

So for front-end development, Python does not stand a chance against JavaScript, at least not in its current form.

If you want to use Python for backend development, you will have to end up using Django or the Flask framework. Likewsie, if you want to use JavaScript for backend development, then you will use Node.js, a JavaScript runtime environment that helps you run JavaScript code as a backend programming language.

Note, everybody dreams of using the same language for developing both the frontend and the backend and this is where, JavaScript and Node.js are very popular.

If you are not sure whether to learn Django or Node.js for back-end development. Then I would advise that if you are familiar with Python, you should learn Django. The same is true for JavaScript: If you are familiar with JavaScript, you should learn Node.js.

If you want to become a full-stack web developer, you cannot avoid JavaScript, no matter your backend development language.

In AI/ML and Data Science –>

Python offers a wide range of libraries, packages, and built-in features for data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Popular machine learning libraries such as PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Pandas, TensorFlow, Numpy, etc. are available for Python.

JavaScript also has a large number of libraries for data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Libraries like, TensorFlow.js, stdlib, ml.js, are readily available for Javascript.

Python is the language of choice for most machine learning projects. However, in cases where ML is to be used directly in the browser, JavaScript may be a better option.

Which language can replace Javascript?

You may be wondering, if Python will not replace JavaScript, what language will?

TypeScript has the potential to replace JavaScript. TypeScript is a “superset” of JavaScript, compiled to JavaScript. It also has additional features to work with.

There is another potential replacement language by the name WebAssembly, a binary command format that is able to run on all of today’s web browsers. It also facilitates for any application written in C++, C#, Rust and Python to be delivered to the end user in a web browser without installation and with near native performance.

However, WebAssembly is not intended to replace JavaScript. It is meant to complement and work with Javascriptto provide powerful applications for web pages.
